About Me

I studied history at the University of Amsterdam where I obtained my PhD (1994) on the history of the Irish Republican Army. I subsequently worked as Lecturer in Modern Irish History at Trinity College, Dublin (1994-5) and Queen's University, Belfast (1995-2000). In 2000 I was appointed Assistant Professor in European History at Leiden University, since 2014 I have been Associate Professor. During my time at Leiden I spent a semester as visiting Associate Professor at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia (2004), and a year as a fellow-in-residence at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (2010-2011).
