A home on an island near Vancouver

We live in a comfortable three-bedroom home on a quarter-acre property. We have a lush private garden. Monika runs a preschool from our house. There is a large fenced deck and a driveway suitable for two or three cars. It’s a split level house, with two bedrooms on the top, living room kitchen and bathroom on the main, and a bedroom and two-piece bathroom downstairs. We have big windows overlooking the garden. The cabinets are natural maple. We are non-smokers, and we have a nice fresh air system in the new heat pump. It’s a great place to live, and very central.

We’re five minutes from the Pacific waterfront, near a lagoon. We’re on a quiet street with houses that all look different from each other. We are three minutes from the entrance to a lush regional park with giant cedars, fir and hemlock and a beautiful lake with trails all around.

Bowen Island. We live on a little island near Vancouver, BC. We have the benefit of the big, clean and interesting city nearby, with the small town feeling and beautiful rainforest of rural living.

Many of the people on Bowen Island commute to Vancouver to work each day. For example we have professors going to Simon Fraser University, the University of BC and other centres of education daily. There are opportunities for carpooling.

You get to the island by a ferry from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver. It is a short trip of about 20 minutes with a beautiful view of a rugged fjiord with snow-capped mountains covered in forest. From the ferry you can sometimes see seals, dolphins and whales.

We live in Deep Bay, which is a five-minute walk from the ferry and the small village of Snug Cove. It’s the commercial zone on the island, with several restaurants and cafés, shops, a library, museum and immediate access to forest trails. It has a funky feeling, a combination of buildings dating back to the beginning of the 20th Century and more modern buildings such as a brand new pub, new art gallery and an artisanal distillery. People living there come from all walks of life including people who live on boats and the occasional billionaire. There is a public elementary school, as well as a private middle school.

Vancouver is the third largest city in Canada, a place where in some seasons you can ski in the morning and swim in the afternoon. It features a rich culture, international entertainment opportunities, big league sports and several universities. While you live on a tiny island, you have access nearby to all the pleasures and opportunities of the city.

Over the course of a year you are likely to see a wide variety of wild animals, including: beavers, seals, otters, herons, eagles, dolphins, salmon, pileated woodpeckers, stellar jays, owls, squirrels, vultures, seagulls, songbirds, harmless snakes, alligator lizards, salamanders and many other creatures. You may see whales, and on the mainland nearby you’ll sometimes see bears. Bears or cougars are very rarely seen on the island. There are horses, goats, llamas and sheep on the island as well - and plenty of people with cats and dogs of course. Meanwhile, in Vancouver is one of the best aquariums in the world, which can give you a view of the rich sea life all around us, as well as species from the rest of the planet.

From our home it is easy to get to the Whistler resort, Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and Sunshine Coast, the British Columbia interior, Seattle and the U.S. state of Washington.

About Me
We’re a family of three. Monika is a Swiss preschool and kindergarten teacher. John is a digital designer from Canada. Our daughter, Lenya, is 15, and keen on horses and sports. We enjoy a relaxed rural lifestyle on Bowen Island, near Vancouver. We love animals and see lots of them every day. Our plan is to live for a year in Switzerland as a family adventure. We’d like our daughter to learn more about her other country of citizenship, and the place her mother is from. A year of Swiss culture and European awareness will widen her world considerably, and be refreshing for us.
