Sunny 3br, 1 1/2 bath Berkeley Home
Our Victorian-style home is located within a 10-minute drive/15 minute bike ride to the UC Berkeley campus in a quiet neighborhood, across the street from the little classroom buildings of an elementary school. The house is set back from the street behind a fence and young redwood - when we are on our 2nd/3rd floor (we are the top half of a duplex) we feel like we are in a treehouse.
The home has a cozy library with a built-in window seat spanning one side of the room. Our cute, light-filled bedroom has an upright cabinet grand piano and a queen bed; the 2nd bedroom has giant windows with stained glass borders, a wall-to-wall closet and bunk bed with twin and full mattresses; and the third bedroom is our “skylight room” in the attic with three large skylights, a twin bed, a twin daybed that can become a queen, and a separate area for lounging or playing. The main floor features hardwood floors throughout, 1 ½ baths, and an open kitchen/dining room for fun entertaining or quiet family dinners (including a new “nest”- a mini loft that serves as the kids’ reading nook). A new heating system was just installed. New solar panels now provide electricity for the entire home.
In the spacious backyard are a large outdoor seating area and fire pit beneath apple and avocado trees, a secluded vegetable and flower garden with irrigation system for easy care, and long picnic tables under tropical palms and cacti strung with lights, next to the outdoor grill area with running faucet - this is our favorite place to host friends for feasts and music (our friends say it's their favorite place, too). There is a rustic water tower that serves as our outdoor office for most of the year when it's warm out; it is a perfect retreat for a writer, scholar or musician. There is a basketball hoop, swing, 12 ft climbing wall on the back of the water tower, and ping-pong table and bicycles in the garage (as well as plenty of storage space) for the whole family to use.
We are within walking distance to the Ohlone Greenway bike and walking trail, Aquatic Park, trendy 4th street shops, San Pablo grocery stores and restaurants, and the amazing Franklin Brothers Market on the corner (owned by a local couple) - if they don’t already carry what you need, they’ll get it in stock! This is a highly desirable neighborhood for commuting to and from Berkeley, Palo Alto and SF as the freeway and BART and trans-bay bus service are minutes away, and the rents are more reasonable.
We co-own the house with our dear friend who lives in the apartment downstairs. An old high-school friend, Jonathan is known as “Uncle” to our kids, and is quiet, easygoing, helpful, and lovely to be around. We take care of the house together, and share the driveway and large yard (though he is rarely there, as he works long days and has his own private side yard). Our neighbors on all sides are quiet and friendly.
Optional: our 13-year-old cat Bimini is amazingly sweet and snuggly, and past sub-letters have all loved having her with them, but she can head downstairs to live with Jonathan if you prefer.
$5,500, utilities included. References, rental contract, one month’s advance rent and security deposit are required. Dates could be altered slightly - we can try to make it work if you need a little wiggle room on either end - we are well-aware how challenging it is to find the right home for exactly the right dates!
