Berkeley, California: Comfortable, well-equipped and ideally-located house for rent

Our 1906 Berkeley Arts & Crafts house was fully remodeled and modernized 15 years ago. It has three bedrooms; a formal dining room and living room (both of which have gas fireplaces); an office equipped with high speed laser printer/scanner; a very large and sunny kitchen leading out to a large deck and backyard; two and one-half bathrooms, one with bath tub and shower and the other with shower; and a large basement for storage. Not including the basement, it has 2450 sq. ft. (approx. 220 sq. meters) of living space. There is a driveway and street parking.

The backyard is a raised-bed vegetable and herb garden which may be harvested by the tenants. There are also several sitting areas for afternoon lazing about, reading and entertaining.

The house is centrally located just at the foot of the Berkeley Hills, only a few minutes from the Berkeley "Gourmet Ghetto" with world-famous Chez Panisse restaurant and the Cheese Board (with over 400 varieties of cheese), two major grocery stores and other restaurants and shopping. The campus is a 15-minute walk, as is rapid transit (BART) to San Francisco, the new UC Berkeley Museum and cinematheque and several theaters.

The house is furnished with many French provincial antiques, including armoires, grandfather clocks, oeil-de-boeuf clock, my wife's grandparents' bed, a large oak French farm table, etc. The living room has a recently reupholstered sofa and comfortable chair, two newly-reupholstered French chairs, a large antique armoire and a gas fireplace. The adjoining dining room has a large French country dining table capable of seating eight, a French antique hutch and a built-in Arts & Crafts hutch. There is also a bench seat. Beyond the dining room is an office, looking out through French doors to the deck and garden. It has an L-shaped cherry-wood custom desk, with printer, and an overstuffed chair for reading or relaxing. Next to the office is the large kitchen, fully-equiped with central island and ample counters of either bamboo or Italian quartz. An antique French walnut table sits up to six for casual dining and overlooks the back yar.

The house has solar electricity, so electricity bills are modest. There is a view to San Francisco from the master bedroom/library upstairs. That room has a high-end sofa-bed with excellent mattress, plus a separate French antique double bed and large armoire with TV and DVD. Its ensuite bathroom has a walk-in shower with stream stone floor and tiled walls, plus ample cabinet and drawer space. The second full bath has a large bathtub and walk-in shower, with Italian marble walls and slate floors. The middle bedroom has a queen size sofabed, with other French antique furnishings. The bedroom which we use as our master bedroom has an antique French queen size bed, armoire and built in chest of drawers. All bedrooms have walk in closets.

Our street is quiet and safe, and there are recreational walking possibilities in all directions. We will provide our regular house cleaners, at our expense for the first 5 hours each time, every two weeks during your stay, except that the final cleaning at the end of the rental period will be at tenant's expense.

By separate negotiation, a 2016 BMW i3 all-electric four-door sedan can be rented during your stay at a reasonable rental rate, but tenants must have their own automobile insurance. There is a 220 volt charging station for the electric car on the wall facing the driveway. The car, once fully charged, has an 84 mile (140 km) range, depending on driving conditions.

We are in our mid-70's. My wife is French and is a retired nurse. I am American and practiced law in San Francisco and Berkeley for 45 years before retiring in 2015. We have spent at least one month in Europe each year since 1971, have completed the hike from le Puy in France to Santiago de Compostele in Spain, as well as the Coast to Coast in the UK, trekking in Nepal, etc. We have lived in Paris for several months each of the past several years.
