About Me
Born and educated in the South, I came North for graduate studies and have remained here half a century. Beginning as an American historian, encounters with women of poverty directed me towards issues of social justice and human services. Almost four decades I taught working people at the College of Public and Community Service, University of Massachusetts/Boston. Many worked in public human or health services though some were with the police, fire, one or another level of local and state government. All were eager to have the chance to gain the "paper" that would provide "entry" but often enough, they wanted more, they wanted to make changes that would offer entry to more than themselves. Over the years I have traveled throughout most of American and half of Canada - particularly the Maritimes - Central and Western Europe. Last September I gave presentations in Berlin and Lisbon, for example, and visited friends in Prague and Bordeaux. It comes as a little of a surprise to me, however, knowing my daughters have visited their friends in Russia and China. It's a different world, and better for those differences. In retirement my research, writing, speaking and now blog continue to advocate for those in need, for the most vulnerable in society - who often enough are women, and women caring for children and the elderly. I never imagined this work would be easily done; on the other hand, I had not anticipated that after so much effort I would see support for the marginal not only limited but absolutely threatened. We can still, I believe, continue to make a difference.
