Cambridge Home Near Porter & David Sq & Boston - On Red Line - Harvard, Tufts, MIT, Kendall Square, Mass. General Hospital, Downtown Boston

Please go to the airbnb website listed below to see recent reviews and additional photos. This beautiful apartment is available from approximately July 1, 2019. Dates are negotiable. It is $3200 month, most utilities included.

The apartment is on the first floor of a two family house, a tastefully furnished two-bedroom in a beautiful neighborhood, with a dining room, living room, study, one full bathroom, walk-in closet, and a newly-renovated eat-in kitchen. There is one queen-size bed in one bedroom and two twin beds in the other bedroom, so it sleeps four. The kitchen is fully equipped; there is a large flat screen TV; cable and Wifi, and a washer and dryer in the basement. Our photos say it all…this is a cozy (but roomy), comfortable place to stay while you are in the Boston-Cambridge-Somerville area. Whether it is for business, pleasure, visiting the area colleges and universities or medical centers, you will feel at home on our quiet street just steps from busy Massachusetts Avenue.

My husband and I live upstairs on the second and third floors. You have your own washer and dryer in the basement. Sit out on the back porch and yard and enjoy the garden!

The Neighborhood

This is a safe neighborhood with a lot of open space. Besides our yard, which is considered large by city standards, there is a school with public playing fields, two playgrounds, and public tennis courts at the end of the street on Rindge Avenue. Right around the corner, on Sherman Street, there is a giant public park - Danehy Park - with playgrounds and playing fields, trails for walking and jogging, and in the winter, a giant hill for sledding.

The location gets even more perfect....You can get easily anywhere and everywhere from Hollis Street without a car. Walk, bike, or take public transportation. You will be close to the major universities, museums, medical centers, and other attractions of the Boston- Cambridge area. Hip Davis Square (Somerville) is just short five -minute walk, with its historic movie theater and great restaurants. There are many other restaurants right around the corner on Massachusetts Avenue, like L’Impasto (Italian), Café Barada (Middle-Eastern), Greek Corner (Greek), and Frank’s Steakhouse (American). You can also walk to Jose’s Mexican Restaurant or Grand Gusto Tretorria (Italian) on nearby Sherman Street. There are Asian restaurants, like The Elephant Walk, in the neighborhood too.

Pemberton Farms and Market is diagonally across from Hollis Street on Massachusetts Avenue. This is a wonderful market with farm-fresh produce and specialty foods, a deli, bakery, wine and beer, and excellent meat and fish. Have one of their delicious sandwiches and sip coffee sitting with the flowers at a table in their greenhouse! Shaws/Star Market is a huge supermarket in Porter Square (.5 miles) with everything you could possibly need. Whole Foods is also very close by. Food shopping could not be easier from your home-base.

Getting Around

Logan Airport and South Station are easily accessible by public transportation (subway). You can rent a car in nearby Harvard Square. Zip cars are parked in a lot right across Hollis Street on Massachusetts Ave.

More on public transportation….From Davis Square (5 minute walk), you can walk to Tufts University or go by bus. You can also get on the Red Line subway line in Davis Square, and be in Porter Square (Lesley University) in 1 stop; Harvard Square (Harvard University) in 2 stops: Central Square (MIT) in 3 stops; Kendall Square (MIT) in 4 stops, Massachusetts General Hospital and historic Beacon Hill in 5 stops, and then downtown Boston in 6 stops! This location is w perfect alternative to staying in Boston. A city bus that goes to Porter and Harvard Squares also stops frequently at the end of Hollis Street.

Colleges located right in downtown Boston include Emerson College and Suffolk University. You can also pick up the historic Freedom Trial right outside the subway stop and brush up on your American history. From downtown Boston you can connect to the subway lines that take you to other colleges and universities, like Northeastern, Boston University, and Boston College, the University of Massachusetts (on Red Line), and Tufts, Harvard and Boston University Medical Schools. Ride the subway to acclaimed museums such as the Boston Children’s Museum, the New England Aquarium, the Boston Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Gardner Museum. Other attractions that are a short walk or subway ride from downtown include the New England Aquarium, Boston’s North End, Quincy Market, and the JFK Library and Museum (on Red Line). Needing to be close to some major medical centers? You can take public transportation there. Massachusetts General Hospital is very accessible – it’s on the Red Line. You can take the T to the Longwood medical area for Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, Beth Israel-Deaconess Hospital, Dana Farber Institute, and the Joslin Diabetes Center.

Prefer to walk or bike? It’s a pleasant walk or bike ride to Harvard Square (1.5 miles) the house. Ask me how to walk/bike the really pretty back road route to Harvard Square, which only a true Cantabrigian, like me, would know. Hubway bikes are available to rent on the corner of Hollis Street ($6. for 24 hours). Ride a bike along the Charles River to Boston! You can also pick up the Minuteman Bike Trail in our neighborhood and ride to historic Lexington, where you can visit Lexington Green, where the the American Revolutionary War began. Ask me about some other little-known biking and hiking trails that wind through the woods and wildlife refuges beyond Lexington to historic Concord and beyond…they are just a bike ride away from Hollis Street. Visit Lexington and Concord historical sites by car too, they are a 15-20-minute ride from the house north on Massachusetts Avenue.

Other Things to Note

There is a pretty Catholic Church on the corner of Hollis Street and Massachusetts Avenue, with church bells that ring throughout the day (but not at night). Other places of worship are within walking distances or accessible by public transportation.

This apartment is available for short or longer term rentals. It's a perfect place for visiting faculty and their families, for graduate students, or for anyone wanting to explore the Boston-Cambridge area. See the link to a website with more photos and info about short-term rental rates.

About Me
I'm a college professor, with a husband and 3 grown kids and we live in Cambridge and in Harwich Port Massachusetts We have two nice places to stay when you visit Massachusetts - a cottage by the sea on Cape Cod and and lovely 2 bedroom first floor apartment in our two family home in Cambridge. Regarding our Cambridge listing: Part of my mother's family emigrated to Cambridge at the turn of last century from Co. Kerry, Ireland, taking up residence in our Hollis Street neighborhood that was once called "Little Dublin". Her cousins became successful funeral home owners and leaders in the Cambridge community. This neighborhood was also home to the famous House Speaker, "Tip" O'Neil, and has a rich history, dating back to the Revolutionary War. The first floor apartment where my parents once lived has been renovated and is now available for guests. I like to travel, garden, and be near the ocean!
