The Red House in Mendocino

I am offering this home for rent for the coming academic year at a time in which is difficult to know what the coming months or year might hold. It may be extremely difficult, impossible, for you to anticipate what your needs will be in the future. But if you are thinking of a retreat, finding a safe place to write that book or bring that concept to fruition in a small community isolated from many of the uncertainties of urban life, please contact me about the Red House. It has sheltered creative people for these same reasons for many decades. It can feed and support you in your work.

The Red House has been our family home for 60 years. It is a simple house in the village of Mendocino on the northern California coast, a bit of old Mendocino originally made from two Chinese laborer shacks over 100 years ago. During the peak of the logging era, old sea captains would come and sit on the point to watch the shipping lanes, a 200 degree view of the Pacific Ocean.

The house is in a quiet and beautiful corner of the village abutting Mendocino Headlands State Park to the north. We call it the "high part of the low part of town." The Mendocino area has plenty of amenities and is home to a rich and interesting community of locals. Visual artists have sought out the Mendocino Coast for its rugged beauty for generations. My parents were some of the first artists to migrate to the area in 1960.

This is an ideal writing retreat for one person, though there is room for two. There is one bedroom and another room for an office or studio or second bedroom. It is humble and a bit fragile, like most older houses, with a wonderful history.

The house is freshly furnished and most utilities are covered. The coast is foggy, but the house has a wood stove and propane heat, so it is comfortable in cool weather. The views of the ocean from every room are stunning. The walks out the front door along the headlands, to the beach, or through town are easy and refreshing.

I'd like to share this house with the right person seeking a quiet and inspiring retreat. It is a 3-hour drive to the San Francisco Bay Area through some gorgeous wine country. Ideally the rental is for the academic year only so our family can enjoy a few weeks per year in the house.
