My wife Chandra and I spent two weeks in May in A's lovely apartment, and keep thinking about when we can be back next. The location is perfect: it is a stone's throw from Campo dei Fiori, and we felt like we lived the way a resident of Rome does. We got groceries (fresh vegetables, salad greens, wine, baked goods, etc.) every other day, and never had to walk more than 5 minutes. The area is off-limits to cars, and there was a lot of foot traffic. That's exactly what we loved. The neighborhood is somewhat noisy during the day, and occasionally at night -- but that is what you expect in Rome (or just about every other major city in the world). The apartment itself is very well furnished, and since it has been in A's family for generations it feels like you are staying as a cherished guest in someone's home rather than in a boring hotel room. (The building dates back to the 1600s, and there is an old church at one end of this tiny street.)
We cooked a fair amount, ate out when we felt like it, and loved to hear the sounds of the city outside our window in the evenings as we relaxed with a bottle of wine. All in all, a wonderful experience.
We had several professional meetings during those two weeks, and most of our colleagues wanted to meet with us near our home -- because it was so centrally located. The apartment is spacious and both of us were able to do our work quite comfortably. The owner of the apartment, A, is gracious and we felt very well taken care of (even though he was in Geneva, he was in regular touch, as were the professionals who helped us check in).
Everything you could possibly want during your stay in Rome is just a few minutes away. I could not recommend this place more strongly. We've been to Rome several times, but our stay in A's apartment made this visit easily the most enjoyable one.
A couple of things to keep in mind: if you are unusually sensitive to noise, the living room may not be a good place for you to work in, since there are two small restaurants right outside. Also, the wifi does not work all that well in the bedroom (a problem that can be fixed easily if a wifi extender is installed).
But here's my main advice: if you are like us, and are not rushing from monument to monument and more interested in experiencing everyday life in Rome, this may well be the ideal place for you. I can imagine spending a semester or academic year there, especially if a wifi extender is installed.
