Our family home is a modern, bright and spacious maisonette apartment with 3 bedrooms, an open plan living and kitchen area (60 m2/650 sqaure feet), a spacious office, a further cosy living room upstairs and a small conservatory with a sofa for two. It is at the very top of a typical Berliner "Gartenhaus" (a detached apartment house set back from the street behind another house) and has views stretching right over Berlin. An elevator takes you to a separate entrance. All bedrooms have floor-to-ceiling windows looking east onto walnut and birch trees. On the lower level, there is a large, glazed open-plan kitchen and living area with a cosy dining corner and a balcony where we grow herbs and flowers. Two very quiet bedrooms (one double, one children’s bedroom with bunk beds) have ceiling lights that so you can lie in bed and look up at the sky. In autumn, we see a red squirrel racing across the roof to get to the walnut tree, and in the summer, we can see the birds sitting in the trees from our beds. There is a bathroom with daylight, a big corner bathtub and a powerful thermostat shower. The apartment has underfloor heating throughout, assisted by solar panels on the roof. An oak spiral staircase leads past a small conservatory ideal for enjoying a cup of coffee, to the upper floor with a very light open-plan study looking out onto the large (25 m2) terrace, a double bedroom/guest room and a second bathroom with daylight. There is also a second living room with a projector installed and a large pull-down screen. This room has all round windows and two doors lead onto the sheltered and private terrace which offers both sun and shade during the Berlin summer. We grow sunflowers, tomatoes and more out here. A second private deck at the very top of the building has views across the whole of Berlin and can be accessed from the terrace. The Campus of the Freie Universität is a 15-minute cycle ride away, or a short journey by bus. It is a seven-minute walk to one of two nearby train stations with trains taking 15 minutes to Potsdamer Platz and the centre of Berlin. The closest underground station is an 8-minute walk; several busses leave around the corner. Nearby Schloßstraße has a lot of shops, restaurants, cafés and several malls. There are at least 4 supermarkets within easy walking distance, and several children’s playgrounds around the corner. There are also two organic supermarkets and a great farmers market a ten-minute walk away. Nearby parks include the “Insulaner” (with open air swimming pool in summer) and the Botanical gardens.
