I teach architecture and urban studies at KU. I am a Maine native, married to a 5th generation Lawrencian and we both received our doctorates from UC Berkeley. Rex in zoology and me in architecture. We would like to host people who need to spend time in Lawrence or nearby. We would like to host environmentally aware people who would appreciate an older home that is fully modernized and the diverse neighborhood. Lawrence is a small university town of 100,000 people on about 34 square miles that was founded in 1854. The old east Lawrence neighborhood where I live is, is tree-lined, with many brick streets (like mine) and is quiet, safe, and mostly filled with older modest single-family homes in various stages of aging. Our neighborhood is NOT into manicured lawns, yards are very shaded, and we like to promote diversity and access to a variety of people, family structures, and wild creatures (rabbits, squirrels, possums, mice, raccoons, and even a fox inhabit the neighborhood). Plenty of parking in the drive and on the street in front of the house. There is an unpaved back alley where the trash, yardwaste, and recycling are located (early Wed. AM pickup weekly for trash; biweekly for recycling (blue container). An excellent grocery store (renovated in August 2012) is an easy bike ride away (about 5 blocks) Dillons, at the corner of 17th and NH/MASS. I use Checkers a local grocery at 23rd and Louisiana. I have a community garden plot two lots to the north of the house at 1313 Pennsylvania...with rhubarb, tomatoes, lettuce, beets, herbs etc. that I am happy to share with you in season. The University of Kansas is very close (only .9 mile to the major conference space/Jayhawk Blvd) but the last .2 mile is up a VERY steep hill. Haskell Indian Nations University is .5 miles south and very walkable. Downtown is about .8 miles with no hills. Burroughs Creek is a lovely walking path to the wetlands south of town and just a few blocks away. The house is fully-furnished with hardwood floors throughout. I've been renting with airbnb since 2012 (a superhost) and prefer to rent longer term. 1st Fl: entry, sitting/TV rm, funky dining/living rm w/piano; renovated kitchen, & laundry 1/2 bath, deck & patio, gas grille, & small fish pond. Steep stair w/winders to 2nd floor where all three bedrooms and full bath is located. 3 BRs: 1 Queen, 1 Double, & 1 Sngl, full bath on hallway. Not a clan-gathering type place--quiet clean comfy.
