Elegant, light-filled, upstairs apartment with a porch, deck and garden in a 1909 brick house on a quiet street in the Rondout section of Kingston. Uniquely decorated and furnished: windows on every wall, fully equipped kitchen/living room, big leather sofa, projector (Apple TV) with drop down screen, for movies; it's our home away from home. Very much not your standard 3-spoon 2 plate rental. An eyrie or a boat or a nest or something, it is much loved. Come in from the street onto the porch and up the stairs to the landing (which is also yours to use). The apartment has its own private entrance (door from an old convent). The living room is dominated by a leather sofa which looks into the center of the space with the kitchen on the opposite wall, so cooking, eating and hanging out are communal experiences. There are open shelves, full of kitchen stuff and books. Parrot by Starck floor speakers play straight from your phone or can be connected to the projector for home entertainment. The living room has a door to the small outdoor deck which overlooks the garden, both of which are yours to use, along with the front porch. The kitchen has all the cups, saucers, plates, saucepans, bowls and stuff you could possibly need, along with glasses, teapots, a blender, kettle, and all sorts other stuff. The stove is a stylish Unique Classic, as is the free-standing pseudo-vintage fridge. An old door from a gun shop in Saratoga takes you into the bedroom, which is partially finished with oiled wood from our friend Frank's barn. There's a queen-size bed with an oiled slab headboard, paintings, huge mirrors, a mantle and a vintage Danish set of drawers and under-bed storage. The bed has pillows, sheets, a duvet and Muji bedding. Another door takes you into the bathroom which has a claw-foot tub (which doubles as a shower) a sink, mirror and lights from an old nunnery. The toilet squirts, which is a wonderful thing. There's loads of towels. The house has high-efficiency heat pumps for winter and air-conditioning for summer. There's a washer/dryer in the basement which you can use for free. The deck is yours and the porch and garden are shared with friends, but don't worry, they're nice and rarely here. People who pass by the porch love to chat. Dog-walking is a thing. There's loads of street parking and plenty to do nearby if you feel the urge. Shops and restaurants, the river is really close, the walk through the cemetery uptown, the beach at Kingston Point Park, rail trails, kayak rentals, farmer's markets. Great biking too. And the Catskills, of course. But the best thing to do, honestly, is just hang out here. At night wails from the freight trains crossing the old trestle upstream echo down the valley. A pet is great as long as it's not a brontosaurus or something. A quick note; despite upstairs being its own thing, the house dates from 1909 and has 19th century infrastructure and sound insulation. As neighbours, we're respectful of each others' presence. So if throbbing music, trance parties or gymnastics are your cup of tea, it might not be the right place.
