Yarrow Bungalow, our Venice cottage, embodies a modern twist on tradition. Purchased in 2018 for demolition and rebuilding, the first lockdown unveiled its charm, leading us to refurbish rather than replace. Gratitude goes to the previous owners whose vision encouraged us to optimize and cherish the home's inherent beauty. Bright and airy, the house's open plan offers a unique, intimate entertainment area. Embracing the existing white plantation shutters, we chose Farrow and Ball's whites to create a clean, neutral canvas, allowing the diverse decor to form a harmonious blend. Tailored to our family's needs, including considerations for neurodiversity, we've implemented solutions for an uncluttered, organized living environment, ensuring everything has its place. The design maximizes the open space for entertainment while establishing well-defined sections for both community and privacy. The private spaces are strategically placed away from the street, providing tranquility and seclusion. Our teenager's bedroom is crafted around her lifestyle of utilizing the bed for various activities. A platform bed doubles as a workspace and leisure area, complete with storage solutions and a hammock from Cielo Hammocks, highlighting our favorite feature. Nearby, a guest-friendly bathroom combines modern upgrades with original charm, featuring Domus accessories and sustainable Public Goods products. An unexpected room serves as the family's heart, doubling as office space, a TV room, and guest accommodation. Connected to the master bedroom and patio, its warmth is especially cherished in colder Los Angeles winters. The master suite, located at the rear for ultimate quiet, features a queen bed, stylish furnishings, and another beautiful Cielo hammock, alongside an en-suite bathroom equipped with Domus and Public Goods products. We prioritize clean living; all cleaning and personal care products are natural and sustainable, from brands like Public Goods and Seventh Generation. Linens are 100% organic cotton by West Elm, and towels are soft Egyptian cotton by H Frette. A special water treatment system ensures our water is revitalized, mirroring the quality of spring water. The garden, designed by us, pays tribute to California's native vegetation, focusing on drought-resilient plants to honor our commitment to natural resource conservation. The front yard celebrates the chaparral ecosystem with ceanothus and Manzanita plants. Through thoughtful design and sustainable living practices, Yarrow Bungalow stands as a testament to embracing potential, cherishing the old while welcoming the new, and creating a space that nurtures, protects, and inspires.
