Spacious basement suite in residential north Portland neighborhood. Queen bed, kitchenette, bathroom, and dining / living area all to yourself. Large, peaceful green yard and garden with a barrel sauna. Friendly hosts who are committed to professional, equitable, safe and responsive (but not overbearing) hospitality. Bedroom has sunny egress window looking out onto a large green yard and garden. Comfortable queen bed with plenty of pillows. Kitchenette includes a refrigerator, induction hotplate, microwave, toaster oven, and sink. It is equipped for cooking simple meals with dishes, cutlery, pots and pans, salad spinner, coffee and tea fixings, etc. Attached bonus living room has television, comfortable chairs, and dining table and chairs, which also work as a work space. This room doesn't have windows. High speed wifi. Television comes Roku streaming service. Bose radio. An external monitor is provided to connect to laptops for more screen space. (We can't guarantee connections work with every laptop.) Washer and dryer on site down the hall from your suite, shared with your hosts. The yard is quite large for our urban setting, with apple and plum trees, an enormous gerry oak and a red oak, veggie garden, flowers, native shrubs and a barrel sauna. We aren't prize winning gardeners but we love our green space, and it's large enough that multiple people can be enjoying the space without being in each other's laps. The Portsmouth neighborhood is mostly residential, with nearby (1 mile) St. Johns and Kenton business districts offering restaurants, groceries, theater, pubs, public libraries, etc. We take your safety and comfort seriously. The suite is equipped with safety features including a fire extinguisher, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and basic first aid supplies. In a basement suite, you will hear our footsteps and those of our cat and dog. The dog is a whippet and not a big barker, although he does occasionally yell at a squirrel outside. Neither animal goes into your space. There's also a train tunnel that runs nearby. We love the sound of the horns but be aware that there may be a bit of a rumble as they pass. We are on several good bus lines (#35, #4 and #75) and street parking is plentiful. You can also park in our wide driveway. We have lived here for 11 years and over that time have hosted guests and neighbors over short term and long-term, for periods of up to three years. People tell us they appreciate the space, cleanliness, and amenities, and we are told overall it is a very good value for the area. One of us is ABD (history, U of Michigan) and still has good friends in academia, which brought us to this site. We both work in public service now. We are friendly and delight in telling people about our corner of the world, but not such extraverts that we need you to entertain us. :) If we get to the point where it seems like it's a good match, we will ask you to do a background check, which costs $38, and we will use a standard rental agreement. We're pretty flexible. For stays of under 28 days, see our short term listing on Airbnb. A background check and agreement aren't necessary in that case.
