1 BR w/BA in Spacious, Art-filled, and Excellently Located Vintage Home

Chicago, Illinois, United States
Rates from USD $950 | Monthly

House | Private Space
Available Dates:
From July 1, 2024 until June 30, 2025

The house is a 1916 stucco single family home with about 2100 sq. ft. of living space, nestled in a quiet residential area half a block off a lively retail street in the Chicago Edgewater neighborhood with art and theaters, and a fine mix of shops, cafes, and restaurants. Beaches on Lake Michigan are in walking distance as are the Chicago Mosaic School; the Loyola University campus; and the area of quirky Andersonville while bike lanes are sprouting (inclucing a bike track along the lake front to downtown). One stop of the Metra; several bus stops as well as two stops of the CTA 'Red Line', all in walking distance, provide easy access to public transport e.g. to DePaul University or downtown. Other Chicago Universities, including Evanston's Northwestern University, are accessible with some commuting time. Car sharing is negotiable; and street parking is usually manageable. The first floor provides ample space to share. There is an open kitchen with common amenities (dish washer, microwave, 'quick meal' counter); a dining room with a table which can do double duty as office desk; a living room currently set up with a small screen & DVD player; a family/sun room dedicated to lounging, hearing music, reading, and socializing. Two porches plus a Japanese inspired garden in the back provide outdoor living spaces in warmer months. On the second floor, you would occupy a furnished guest room with a build-in closet, a queen-size bed, a drawer chest, night stands, and your own separate bathroom across the hallway. Sheets and towels will be provided; the basement offers storage space, a work shop, and a laundry room with washer and dryer; a dry cleaner is also close by. Additionally, since SARS-CoV-2, I have HEPA grade air filters set up throughout the house, including one in your room, which are also helpful with smog and smoke (like from wildfires in the 2023 summer). Your contribution to the costs of utilities (gas, water, electricity, WiFi) and cleaning once every two weeks will be included in the total rent of $950. I will ask for a month's rent as deposit. Finally, there is a last issue to raise: I smoke cigarettes, thus the house is not 'smoke-free', resp. 'smell-free', despite the air filters and opening windows as much as possible in respect to the weather. I try to minimize the impact, i.e. I only smoke in my rooms, outdoors in warmer months and, in colder months, only in one room on the shared 1st floor (which would be the only 'indoor smoking space' for also smoking tenants), and I empty and wash ash trays diligently. But if you are very sensitive to the odor of cigarette smoke, this place is probably not for you. For further questions, please get in touch.
