Chicago, Illinois, United States
Apartment on the first floor of a historic building from 1911, originally inhabited by Chicago's urban upper-middle class. The apartment has two large living spaces: a spacious living room with a working gas fire place that keeps us cozy in winter and a large dining room adjacent to the kitchen. A separate family area consists of two bedrooms and a bathroom ; it is separated by an extra set of doors. We use one of these as master bedroom (furnished with queen bed, nightstands, armoire, and dressers) and the other as nursery for our 2.5 year old daughter—it is furnished accordingly. (The crib can be transformed into a kid's bed.) The third bedroom is connected to the smaller bathroom, in what originally used to be servant's quarters. We use this room as a study (office) and an occasional guest room (it has a desk with chair and bookshelves as well as a futon that sleeps two). The apartment has wooden floors throughout, original decorative woodwork on the walls and ceilings, which gives it a wonderful charm. Both bathrooms have bathtubs with showers; the main bathroom has a new double shower system. This apartment has two spectacular outdoor spaces: a spacious front porch attached to the living room, ready for spring meals (table+ two chairs), afternoon hangouts (two additional rocking chairs), or summer splashing (foldable kids swimming pool). There is also a delightful garden at the back of the house which is a flower-filled refuge with a fish pond. It includes garden furniture for small gatherings with friends. We share this space with our neighbors, who are the nicest people. You enter the back garden from the kitchen door, which leads to the back deck -- we currently use it mostly as storage space, but it can be adapted for barbecue or other leisurely purposes. The building is away from the street and sidewalk, creating space for a front garden. There is a public school and a public park across the street, which make the immediate surroundings very pleasant. Please see additional photos of the apartment and outdoor spaces at the link below (bottom of this page).
