About

Our home is ideal for someone looking for a peaceful home in a beautiful nature. The Barn House is part of a small settlement around an old farm, situated on the south-facing slope of the Tay valley in the vicinity of Aberfeldy, Scotland. Walking up the hill from the house it is possible to wonder for hours in the wilderness of the Highlands, while a short walk down to the valley follows river westwards to Loch Tay and through Aberfeldy to Dunkeld in the other direction. There are many waterfalls, rivers, lakes and forests to explore, including the mountain massif around Glen Lyon and the glacier landscape of Ranoch Moor. Both Scottish national parks - Cairngorms and Trossachs - are within one hour drive. Train station in Dunkeld/Birnam provides connection to all Scottish cities - Edinburgh and Glasgow are around 90 minutes away - as well as overnignt train, Caledonian Sleeper, to London. The architect-designed house (2007) opens up to the large private garden with monumental sycamore tree, small burn and a pond, stone circle fireplace and wildflower meadows, with views of surrounding hills as a background. Unusual spatial arrangement of the house takes advantage of a slight slope, and creates asymmetrical symmetry along the north-south axis, with the east part with high barn vaulted ceilings, while the western part splits over two floors. These tree distinct levels are connected via central rounded stairways, with the main living spaces to enjoy privacy and peacefulness of the garden. In the early mornings the air is full of the sounds of birds and red squirrels, hares and pheasants often visit the grounds. In the evenings the sound of the burn behind the garden walls complements the views of sun setting over the hills, and at nights it provides excellent space for stargazing, undisturbed. The accommodation provides bright, warm and generous space for a family life, while ensuring privacy of the bedrooms scattered around different corners of the house. The east facing side of the house is surrounded by a smaller front garden and includes spacious entry and hallway, stairways, en-suite bedroom, and guest bathroom. Few steps down, on the west side of the house, is a large open-plan space that includes kitchen and dining room with direct access to the garden. Another en-suite bedroom, which has a benefit of both east and west exposure, is accessed through a few steps up from this space. Expansive living room and additional two bedrooms and a bathroom are located on the first floor, facing mainly west. There is an underfloor heating throughout, complemented by a wood burning stove in the living room. Narrow balcony extends the whole length of the living room and enhances the connectedness of inside and outside living spaces, and the rain gently resonates throughout the house thanks to the sloped roof forming the ceiling. Aberfeldy is a small town of around two thousand inhabitants formed around the banks of river Tay. It offers excellent cultural, community and market infrastructure, including medical centre, dentists and opticians, primary and secondary school, library and large sport centre as part of community campus, complemented by Birks cinema with Heartland Film Society, Watermill bookshop and gallery and a wide range of independent cafes and restaurants, as well as several nature adventure companies. Nearby communities offer additional opportunities, including Birnam Arts Centre and Pitlochry Festival Theatre, sailing club at Loch Tummel, and various natural and heritage sites, such as iron age Crannnog Centre on Loch Tay, ospreys at Scottish Wildlife Trust's Loch of the Lowes, and The Scottish Plant Hunters Garden with a collection of plants from all around the world.

House Sitting

I may need help while I am away

I may need help with plants or garden

The garden is intentionally left wild, with many trees planted in the last two years. We only cut grass on a small part of it. We would welcome watering household plants, but could also move them to a friend instead.
