Description

Dates and rent negotiable. My partner and I (professor and therapist respectively) live between North Carolina and Berlin. We'll be in the US Aug. 2024-June 2025, potentially with a brief spell back in Berlin for the winter holidays. Thus we're looking for someone to take over for one or both semesters. The apartment is an airy, rustic, and duplex apartment in the Seitenflügel ("side building") on the 4th (and fifth) floor of a renovated Altbau right on Weserstrasse. It is beautifully set up with unique amenities not usually found in many apartments in Berlin, including a sauna, airconditioning (both cooling and heating that supplements the radiators), and a large balcony/terrace from which the sauna and the rooftop can be accessed. In terms of layout, the apartment is a one bedroom and is open concept: the bottom floor has a large walk-in closet as you enter with washer on site, a large kitchen/sitting area, modest-sized bedroom, and bathroom; the upper floor is a large open workspace and living room, with a fireplace, big balcony/terrace, and rooftop access. The living and workspace can be divided by a curtain and include a guest couch-bed. The workspace has one small and one large desk; the latter's height can be electronically adjusted for sitting or standing. The kitchen is fully stocked for cooking. The building is a warm environment where the neighbors all know one another. The apartment is located in one of Berlin's most vibrant, multicultural areas, with coffeeshops, restaurants, bars, vintage stores, bookstores, shops, and workspaces. The location is truly ideal, with multiple supermarkets within short walking distance (Edeka, Netto, Bio Company, Aldi, Lidl, Karstadt, Arabic shops), as well as nearby public transport: the U7 and U8 at Hermannplatz are about an 8 minute walk away, and the M29 and M41 (amongst others) are around the corner. These provide direct (or otherwise quick) connections to major stations and institutions, including the Humboldt University and Staatsbibliothek (both at Potsdamer Platz and Unter den Linden), both of which are also easily reachable by bike. And while the flat is located in a lively area, because it is high up in the Seitenflügel, it is very much an oasis of calm and quiet, and is bright because it is not obstructed by the Vorderhaus. The canal and two parks (Görlitzer Park and Hasenheide) are within easy walking distance, and Tempelhofer Feld not much further away. Dates for renting are reasonably flexible. Ideally we'd like someone to take over for the entire period we're gone (Aug. 1 - ca. June 1), but we're also open for a semester long stay (e.g. Fall 2024) or simply longer stays within that period. We were planning on coming back to Berlin for the Winter holidays (Dec. 11-29), but if someone is interested in renting through the spring semester (e.g. to May/June 2025), we're willing to work together to find an amenable solution (e.g. foregoing our winter trip or, in the event that the future tenant(s) will themselves be gone over that period, to prorate the month). We can show the apartment in person or virtually until July 30; after that we'll have to organize for a friend to show the apartment (including virtually). We're especially interested in renting to a trustworthy person who will appreciate the apartment and with whom we can communicate clearly.
