Description

Couple looking for an intellectual bolt-hole for their book and website in 2024 in the UK. Hi I’m the founder of a project called WISE UP. It’s connected to the fact that many of us don’t want to retire or can’t yet retire. The objective of the blog is to explore the economic and health benefits of keeping people out of full retirement for as long as possible. Over time it become a hub for material that reflects the trend in society towards dynamic ageing and a rejection of stereotypes around older people. My husband and I are collaborating on the project together - in addition - to our other writing pursuits. Unlike me he expects to travel between France and the UK as we are putting the final touches on our building project in a property close to a Bastide town called Mirepoix that lies between Carcassonne and Toulouse. You'll see I did my undergraduate and postgraduate work at Oxford. Chris read history at Trinity. I’ve just finished being a carer for my Mum who died in May 2023. I’m waiting for probate before I can buy or rent somewhere on a more permanent basis. A friend recommended that until then I look at Sabbatical homes - creating a win-win for both sides. I’m like an empty nester again. It’s a novelty to have the emotional and physical freedom to focus on projects without distraction. Our interests include photography, video, music, art and film. We are also time-agnostic. Being baggage light, we're open to several listings at different times of the year. And if the right match we could stay for longer than the period initially sought.

About Me

From an intellectual perspective, I did my doctorate at Oxford on the Idea of the Great Man in Germany between Napoleon and Hitler in historiography using Alexander the Great as an illustration.( Much of the field work took place in Berlin which I loved. ) Prior to this, I did Greats at Pembroke College. The revelation being not my brilliance at Classics... but rather that my year constituted the first intake of women. (That truly dates me!) During my thesis, I began to work as a researcher for TV. Later I co-founded a production company with Chris Goddard - my now husband. He is the author of a book called Jazz Away from Home. The foundation and shape of the book grew out of interviews done in the 1970s with musicians and French cultural heavyweights who came to prominence in the 1920s. We kept the company going until around 2005 - specialising in social issues and current affairs .We won two prizes for our filming: Best Business Documentary Series and the Best European Political Documentary. Since then I have freelanced and ghost-written articles or done media strategy. If there’s a common thread here - it’s my fascination with politics and the structures of society. So it’s no coincidence that right now my husband and I are investigating the corrosive role of misinformation on our democratic process. We have a house between Toulouse and Carcassonne. The renovation should be complete in 2024 and then it will be posted on Sabbatical
