Digital Nomads Seek Gap Year

I am originally from Oakland, California, and have lived in Connecticut for 20+ years. Now that my husband and I are empty nesters, I'd love to live in the San Francisco Bay Area for 11 months to show my husband the joys of the West Coast. I long to be near family and friends I haven't seen in decades. I have recently returned to graduate school to study public history and will conduct some research there. My husband is a software engineer, so it also seems a suitable environment for him, to say the least. We have been members of TrustedHousesitters.com for a few years and have done pet sitting and housesitting this way to have a less costly way to travel and experience new places. We would love to exchange or use this way of finding a place to stay for a year. We're looking for a home base from which we can study and explore the Bay Area. I want to let my husband know what the Eucalyptus smells like while hiking in the woods, what a truly expansive public beach is like, and how the air just feels different. He's never tasted sun-ripened lemons and oranges, lived among palm trees, and experienced a friendly vibe of friends and family. This time in California will help us reconnect with who we were before we had our daughter, and give us a chance to get out of our old habits and cold winters and experience a different kind of life, one that I've tried to explain but can't capture in words.
