The Firehouse has been home to Cornell faculty, visiting scholars, and graduate students since 2022, who appreciated its quiet setting, generous space, and contemporary design. Several have told us they accomplished more writing and research here than they expected, thanks to the unusual quiet and lack of distractions. We are two New York City graphic designers who bought and renovated this 1960 firehouse in a small rural hamlet in the Finger Lakes. We completely remodeled the upper floor while preserving its airy, loft-like feel and a hint of its industrial past. The apartment has its own private entrance with convenient off-street parking just outside your door. Inside, the rooms are unusually spacious: a nearly 24-foot living room and a sun-filled, south-facing kitchen stretching almost 20 feet. There are two bedrooms—a primary bedroom with a queen bed and a second room that currently serves as an office with a twin bed but can easily function as a second bedroom. The interiors are furnished with classic mid-century modern and contemporary pieces, dimmable lighting and artwork by local and New York City artists. The bright gourmet kitchen features Carrara marble countertops, stainless steel appliances, a Bosch dishwasher, a professional-grade 900 CFM range hood, and quality cookware and tableware for those who enjoy cooking. The bathroom includes an energy-efficient Bosch washer and dryer. A sunny south-facing deck overlooks our organic vegetable and flower gardens and the woods beyond. The pergola-covered patio and front gravel garden belong to our downstairs residence, but because we live here only part-time, guests are welcome to enjoy those spaces whenever we are away. Heat is provided by propane-fired baseboard heating or a powerful Norwegian wood stove, while a window air conditioner keeps the apartment comfortable during the summer. Although surrounded by nature, the Firehouse is not isolated. Our hamlet is home to artists, filmmakers, craftspeople, musicians, nature enthusiasts, and academics, and is a progressive LGBTQ-friendly community. Cornell University and Ithaca College are both approximately 11 miles away, making for an easy 20–25 minute drive. Just a five-minute walk from the apartment is the Lindsay-Parsons Biodiversity Preserve, with many additional hiking trails nearby. Within a ten-minute drive you’ll find Ithaca Beer Co., South Hill Cider, seasonal farm stands, CSA pickups, and other Finger Lakes attractions. One of our favorite destinations is Stone Bend Farm, where wood-fired pizza and local craft beer are served in a greenhouse setting. Additional photographs, a floor plan, and a video walkthrough are available at modfirehouse.com.
