We bought El Huajal in 2005 after spending 4 weeks vacationing in Oaxaca. We had both always loved Mexico and fell in love with the area -- the mountains, the many artisan pueblos, the warmth of the community and the great food. Some friends told us about the house and after going to see it we knew we wanted to own it and build a life there. There is so much that we love about El Huajal (the name of our house and a local tree!) -- the bright, airy, open feeling of the house, the expansive back yard, the cactus gardens, the sounds of the neighborhood goats and chickens, the wonderful community of North Americans and Mexicans living in the area and the warmth of the Mexican culture. Located in the village of San Pablo Etla, our beautifully landscaped home is situated on one acre with limes, oranges, pomegranates and loquat trees, cactus gardens and many other native Mexican vegetation, The house sits on one level with an open and airy layout and a beautiful sunset view. This quiet house offers an ideal home for researchers, writers, hikers, nature lovers, birdwatchers and artists. The community has wonderful places to visit just a 5-minute walk from our home: Selvática, where organic soaps are produced; a local Palenque, which produces mescal and offers a monthly full moon dinner with an invited quest chef from the area, and a terrific local breakfast spot. Within a 15-minute drive you can visit a Mixteca workshop that creates Alebrijes, whimsical carvings depicting animals, people, and imaginary creatures painted in bright colors, the town of Pueblo Nuevo, where brilliant textiles are woven and the neighboring village of San Augustin and the wonderful gallery CASA.
