I was brought up in Japan, then Australia, after which I spent 13 years living in Kyoto, first as a graduate research student and then settling into living in this beautiful city. I now share my time between Japan and Australia, and this is my home when I’m in Kyoto I am a translator, specialising in contemporary art (primarily art exhibition-related material including exhibition catalogues) and travel with my work, and this wifi-equipped quiet and cozy house is also a perfect working environment. The house is ideal for one or two people who, like me, appreciates a quiet and secluded house in a historical, green and heritage area that is the Nijo Castle precinct, and yet only a walk away from shops and public transport where all the major attractions that Kyoto has to offer can be accessed by a bus, train or subway ride. The House: The property is a Machiya-style house in a narrow laneway across the road and moat from Nijo Castle, in central Kyoto. Nijo Castle is a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Sites, and the entire neighbourhood is peaceful and quiet. The house has been fully renovated but retains its traditional features such as sliding paper doors and tatami (mat) rooms (in two of the rooms in the house). It comprises 2 levels. Downstairs - there is a fully-equipped kitchen/dining area, living room, plus a large bathroom, toilet and vanity. Upstairs - there are two bedrooms (one traditional tatami, the other with floorboards and twin beds which can be positioned together to form a queen bed. There is also a large balcony outside the main bedroom for hanging washing. The house is equipped a washing machine, aircon on both levels and a Washlet (bidet style toilet with heated seats). The total floor area of the 2-level house is 40 square meters. A portable wifi router comes with the house, but please feel free to discuss the other option of non-portable high-speed internet. During Your Stay: Please feel free to contact me if you have any queries. A caretaker is available to address any emergencies. I offer a cleaning and linen (sheets and towels) change service during your stay, for a fee. Please let me know if you’re interested. Location and Public Transport: Multiple bus routes, the subway and train station are all a walking distance from the house, as are convenience stores, a major supermarket, and a traditional shopping arcade, while taxis are plentiful and affordable. The closest Universities include Ritsumeikan University and Bukkyo University, both a bus ride away.
