We're planning to be on sabbatical from mid-December 2026 to mid-July 2027, and our historic home in Highland Park, NJ could be a great place for you during that time. From the porch swing to the reading nook on the second floor landing, this house is full of places to curl up with a good book (or a stack of midterms to grade). The house was built in 1910 and has been extensively renovated over the decades since, most recently in 2023, when we put in a brand-new kitchen with an induction cooktop, full-size fridge, separate beverage fridge built into the kitchen island, pantry cabinets, pull-out mixer shelf, and a separate coffee and tea station with a dedicated sink and filtered water. The rest of the first floor consists of a powder room under the stairs, a large living area towards the front of the house with TV, turntable, and speakers, flowing into a large dining area facing the fireplace. There is also a three-season room accessible from the front porch with outdoor furniture, additional seating on the porch, a porch swing, a large swing set with three swings, a propane grill, and two separate outdoor patio areas with additional outdoor furniture. The house has three bedrooms and two and a half baths. The third floor is a primary suite with a California King bed, en suite bathroom, and significant closet space. The second floor has one bedroom with a California King bed, one with two twin beds, and a shared bathroom off the hallway. There is also a fourth small bedroom on the second floor that we have set up as a home office, but could fit a twin or full bed instead of the desk setup currently there. The basement is semi-finished, with a washer and drier by a utility sink, and a large art and toy area used by our children. Highland Park is a lovely, tree-filled, and welcoming community, with the perfect mix of walkable amenities and small town charm. Walk or bike to any part of the Rutgers University New Brunswick campuses, easy drive to Princeton University and several research hospitals/pharmaceutical research labs. New Brunswick train station is a short walk (15-20 minutes) away, access to both New Jersey Transit to NYC/Trenton/Newark Airport and Amtrak (entire Northeast Corridor from Boston to D.C. multiple times daily). Driveway spot with Level 2 (fast) EV charger and plenty of street parking.

Comments: Utilities will be charged separately, but this year our electrical bill was only $7 in April and negative (generated more than we used) in May, so the main thing would be natural gas for the steam heat in the winter months and the water heater/drier.
Comments: We will be bringing one of our two cars with us, and would be willing to discuss use of our second car during your stay (mileage based reimbursement for wear and tear and any marginal costs from our insurance company to add you), a 2010 Honda CR-V.
The garden will be "put away" for the season by the time you start, but if you have a green thumb and want to move the lawn a few times in the spring (reimbursed!), we have an electric mower that's very easy to use.

Comments: Potentially snow-shoveling, but we have a lot of sidewalks so it's probably easier if we have professionals handle this unless you crave a workout!
