Description

This is my own home that I am renting out while I am going on sabbatical myself. I prefer someone who will stay the whole academic year. Exact dates are flexible for summer 2027. - Live your hyper-Californian fantasy beach bungalow dream. - Bike to surf, then come back home and shower off outdoors in the warm-water shower. - Extensive food-forest garden with tropical and Mediterranean fruit, veggies, and herbs. - Solar-heated wooden hot tub overlooking banana forest. - Live car-lite in a walkable/bikeable neighborhood. Never worry about beach parking. Pacific Beach has a reputation as a “party” neighborhood, but this part of north PB is a fairly quiet residential area. I live here because it's one of the rare actually walkable/bikeable neighborhoods in San Diego, and I commute to UCSD via e-bike. It's 1.2 miles to the beach or trolley. I have had most of the house remodeled since moving in, so appliances and fixtures are new and high end for things I care about. Kitchen has Fisher-Paykel two-drawer dishwasher (each drawer runs separately), fancy gas stove with fancy oven with pizza mode etc. Bathroom has a bathtub with fancy German shower setup with two showerheads, a satisfyingly deep bathtub, Toto washlet. Whole-house water filter. Miele washer and dryer. I currently have one bedroom configured as a bedroom with a queen bed, one as an office, and one as an exercise room, but there is a second full-sized bed that I can leave in one of the bedrooms. The unusually large yard (7000 square foot lot) has been planted as a quite productive food forest that actually produces a good fraction of the fruit and veggies that I eat. The subtropical climate here works with a lot of tropical fruit (bananas, guavas, papayas, dragonfruit) as well as Mediterranean/Californian (oranges, lemons, limes, nectaplums, berries, artichokes, avocados). Wandering around the garden every day grazing ripe berries, cherry tomatoes, and snap peas straight off the vine is absolutely as glorious as it sounds. My gardener handles all the trimming and weeding, but I would love to find someone who is interested in eating the produce from the garden. Depending on your level of interest, I can have professionals come in to harvest fruit/veggies for you or donate it. The wooden hot tub has solar thermal heating and an electric heater for backup/winter/night. Low-chlorine ozone filter system. It smells like cedar and it’s dreamy to hang out in it in the garden at night. Full disclosure: the electric hot tub heater is by far the biggest consumer of electricity in the entire house. If you don’t use the hot tub, the electricity bill will probably be negative, but forgetting to turn off the electric hot tub heater is expensive. The hot tub is the only reason I'm separating out gas/electric; my own bill was about $900 for 9 months last year with extensive hot tub use. The outdoor shower has on-demand hot water, ideal for showering off after coming back from the ocean. I have keypads on the gate, garage, and backdoor so you don't need to carry a key when you go surfing. Air conditioning is basically not necessary this close to the ocean, although there is a new window unit in the garage in case you need it. There is a gas heater for winter. The shower and laundry both drain into graywater systems in the garden.
