Our family's house was built to take advantage of a panoramic view of the Bay, long before the Berkeley Hills were crowded. Our parents walked the yet-unbuilt streets of Berkeley, looking for the best lot they could afford on Dad's GI Bill. They found their lot, designed the house on the back of an envelope, and built a home that was for many years a lively center of environmental activism. Now we host visiting families (mostly), and love the chance to share the house we grew up in with others. The neighborhood is quiet, safe, and pleasant, great for walking. In addition to terrific views of the Bay, the house has a nearly new furnace, on-demand hot water, and appliances, with a (slightly) updated kitchen. It's a small house, full of windows, bright, livable (and well lived in), with three bedrooms (or two bedrooms and an office), one and a half baths, a fireplace, patio, and fenced garden. It's convenient to Tilden Park, a half block from the bus, a one-and-a-half mile walk from the UC campus. It isn't fancy; it is comfortable, functional, and well loved, and in a very special spot high on the Berkeley Hills. There is an extensive library accumulated by several generations of avid readers, editors, scholars, and writers that you are welcome to browse. One writer-owner stays in the basement studio and works in the garage office. He is very quiet and often away on assignment.

UC Berkeley
Grizzly Peak
Comments: co-owner lives in separate basement studio and shares utilities
Comments: The house works well for small families, given the configuration of bedrooms; the front bedroom is usually used as an office--it has a built-in desk and distracting views of the Bay through giant windows.
The garden manages with occasional attention from the owners, though watering./weeding help from tenants is appreciated, and avid gardeners would have scope for their talents
Comments: watering and weeding are welcomed!

Comments: Private backyard with garden and patio; front porch with terrific view serves as a favorite auxiliary office for many tenants; if you'd like to garden, we welcome your efforts, and if not, no worries--just maybe a little watering, as drought allows.

Comments: The Berkeley Hills rise to 1000 feet above the Bay, providing commanding views and, at least sometimes, an outpost above the fog blanketing the Bay, and the turmoil of downtown Berkeley. Public transportation is OK, and a walk down the hill is great.
