Description

Light-filled, expansive vistas, quiet 3+ bedroom, 2 bathroom house (2480 square feet) with 2 large decks and garden on historic Panoramic Hill, just steps from UC Berkeley. Child-friendly older home (built 1939), completely refurbished and renovated. We are an art historian and a literature professor with two children (14, 12), and our home is filled with original art, books, and toys (should you need them). **The house is next available from mid-June 2022--August 1 2022 (ca. 4-6 weeks)** Ideal for a researcher / academic with family hoping to spend 1+ month very close to UC Berkeley campus. All rooms (except 1 bedroom) and both decks have spectacular vistas of woods, wildlife, sky and water, from the South Bay to the Marin headlands: a constant jaw-dropping three-bridge view (golden gate, bay bridge, san mateo), with visibility to the Farallon Islands and Pacific Ocean on clear days (the "profile" picture here is the view from the upper balcony, snapped with an iPhone). The house is just two doors down from the start of miles of nature trails and idyllic walks through Strawberry and Claremont canyons, redwood groves, the UC Botanical Gardens, and the extended East Bay Regional Park System (Tilden). Only a five minute walk to the UC Berkeley campus (down the historic Orchard Lane steps), and all the cafes on the south side of campus (Caffe Strada, etc). It is situated in the center of Panoramic Hill, a historic district that is one of the oldest and most quaint neighborhoods in Berkeley, full of landmarked Bay Area arts and crafts architecture (by Julia Morgan, Walter Steilberg, Bernard Maybeck, Coxhead). Early Sierra Club charter members lived on the hill (it's where John Muir transcribed his Alaska journals), as well as later bohemians like the avant-garde filmmaker / musicologist Harry Smith. The ground level includes: -- fully furnished kitchen with bay / ocean views, centered around mint-condition 1954 Wedgewood vintage stove with griddle -- large living/dining room with piano, original artwork, antique and comfortable, kid-friendly modernist furniture (Eames chairs, Kofod-Larsen sofa, Nathan Yong desk) -- large master bedroom with cathedral ceiling and picture window: wake up to the san francisco skyline and golden gate bridge visible from your bed -- 2nd upstairs Bedroom with 1 queen bed that faces quiet front garden with large Loquat tree and hedge. -- Bathroom with shower and bathtub -- large off-street driveway with space for 3 vehicles The lower level (with alternate entrance from street) includes: -- very large light-filled 3rd bedroom with separate entrance to lower balcony; currently used as an office; has organic fold-out sofabed mattress (queen) that can sleep 2. -- library area with wet bar, second refrigerator -- 4th quiet office/bedroom (currently set up as a bedroom with a single twin), with woodburning stove and another entrance to lower balcony -- large, beautiful lower bathroom with whirlpool-bathtub, marble tops, shower -- laundry room with energy-efficient front-loading Bosch washer and dryer -- 2nd lower level deck with access to the street and back garden -- large back garden, sloping downhill, with prolific lemon, plum, and quince trees, and a circular path: perfect for kids to run around in. House is fully furnished and 'suitcase ready': All linens, towels, dishes, pots, pans are provided. Wireless internet, TV, stereo sound system included. Plenty of closet and shelf space for your belongings. The monthly rent includes gardener / grounds keeping. Please email if you have any additional questions, or would like to see more pictures of our home.
