Built when the United States was still a British colony, this lovely, spacious flat retains many of its original features. It looks out onto the Green in Stoke Newington, one of London's hippest neighbourhoods, buzzing with great cafes, bookshops and galleries and devoid of dreary chain stores (though there is a Whole Foods nearby...) It's a light two-bedroom flat with a small, sunny garden and a huge living room with open fireplace. It's furnished with the high quality ethno-plunder that comes from a lifetime in Asia and beyond. The kitchen is a joy, and happy to find new users. The bookshelves are very well stocked, which compensates for there being no TV. I travel a lot, and the house is available for short term rental in periods when I'm not here (as listed in this ad). If you just want one room, then dates are slightly more flexible, because I'm happy to overlap with guests for a week or two. Both rooms are large, with a big double beds, storage space and desks. There's linen available, too, and a spare bike for the adventurous. There's one bathroom and a guest loo as well. If you're taking the whole house, kids over 6 are fine (it's not really toddler-friendly), and cats but no dogs, I'm afraid. If we overlap on dates, then the guest room is available for one person only -- no kids or couples. Stoke Newington is a fun area, very neighbourhoody with great bars and parks and a vibrant local arts scene. It is 12 minutes by train to the centre of the financial district (Liverpool St), and there are very good bus connections throughout London. It takes 20 - 30 mins on a door-to-door bus to the British Library, UCL, SOAS, LSHTM, Kings etc, and we're also convenient for the east London campuses (eg. Queen Mary's). Clissold Park and Springfield Park are both nearby (with tennis courts). Springfield park is on the Lea River, and has kayaking and rowing possibilities, as well as wonderful marsh walks that feel remarkably rural for a central London borough.

Stoke Newington Dalston

Comments: Stoke Newington has the feel of a village, with a cafe culture and several lovely parks nearby.
Comments: The house loves cats, but is less keen on dogs. School aged kids are fine, but with lots of low-hanging artworks etc, the house is not suitable for toddlers.
If you take the whole house, I'd appreciate your keeping a eye on the garden, and making sure it gets enough water. Not usually a problem in London, but well, you know, climate change...

Comments: Built in 1756, the house still has its original oak shutters and fireplaces. There's a basement room that works well as a dark room.
