Pender Island, British Columbia, Canada
Southern Gulf Islands oceanfront cottage on 3.5 acres of very private property, with dock & deep water moorage, facing south-southwest on Bedwell Harbour, near Poet's Cove immediately next to the Southern Gulf Islands National Park Reserve (in this location the National Park is a marine park, formerly called 'Beaumont Marine Park' and it shares a border with our property). In terms of distances on the water, also nearby is the first Canadian customs north of the U.S.A. border, inside CDN waters and 5 minutes by boat from Poet's Cove. Please note that map location may sometimes be somewhat imperfect. Kingfisher Cove is right on the ocean/harbour where the white meets the green. You won't be sharing this space with anyone other than those in your party and some wildlife & birds. For full rates details please see our website as posted below. The monthly rates posted here apply only for the posted time period in this listing (Sept 10 until Dec) or by mutual agreement perhaps longer) or Jan until the end of April. Otherwise, the weekly rates as posted on the website apply, although we may discount somewhat for sabbatical homes requests, even in our summer peak season if you are booking 2 weeks or more. The Gulf Islands, including Pender Island, where the cottage and property are located, are in the Strait of Georgia, and are easily accessed by ferry from Tsawwassen on the Vancouver side, or from Swartz Bay on the Vancouver Island side of the strait. In the alternate, you may choose to arrive via float plane -- in this case, a 15 minute flight from downtown Vancouver, or from Richmond (South Terminal of Airport) or a slightly longer trip from Seattle. For those flying in from Calgary or Edmonton, consider flying into the Victoria airport, which is located in Sidney only 5 minutes from the Swartz Bay terminal. This will mean an only 40 minute ferry ride to Otter Bay, the terminal on Pender Island. This 3 level cottage with two very large decks, one off the main and one off the lower level. The lower deck is covered and has a large antique iron bathtub; the top deck is open. There is also a (third) smaller deck at the entrance on the shaded front entrance. The ocean side gets very sunny..... a large Sunbrella and other shade options provided. Great night skies and fabulous sunsets! Fully furnished & equipped. Sleeping loft with queen bed & lower level bedroom with very comfortable queen bed. Some usage (of cottage) restrictions may apply, and details will be provided at the time of your request. There are several excellent hikes nearby including a 45 minute hike from Ainslie Point Road to the peak of Mt. Norman where there are spectacular views of the other Southern Gulf Islands, the San Juan islands in the U.S.A. & Vancouver Island. Another hike, basically from the back door, is to Beaumont Marine Park, again about 40 or 45 minutes along the harbour. There are lots of other outdoor activities available locally, such as golfing, frisby golf, boating, sailing, whalewatching, kayaking & more; or just hang out on the deck & watch the sunset or the amazing night sky Pender Island has only 17% of the rainfall you would experience in Vancouver or Seattle -- it is generally drier, warmer, and has more sunshine. This property faces south/southwest and gets the last rays of sun on the island. Meteorite showers on the horizon are not uncommon and an amazing night sky is the special treat from the upper deck on any of the many clear evenings. Available by the week at the peak season weekly rates (during the summer months May - Aug/Sept - for details see website); and by the week (at separate seasonal weekly rates) during the fall, winter and spring; or by the month only during Oct (perhaps late September) through the end of March or April @ $2700 per month for stays of 3 months or longer. Please note that when booking dates for weekly or shorter stays over Xmas and the New Year, and during Spring Break, this will be at peak season rates. If renting only for a week or two, the Xmas / New Year time period fall into high season as on our web site. Weekly rates are all inclusive. The monthly rate does not include utiliities. During the autumn and winter, our cottage and property, and Pender Island more generally, is the perfect setting for writing a book or a thesis or simply, a great escape! There are gift shops, book stores, wine and beer stores, a bakery/deli, several restaurants, a few cafés, a gas station, a Community Hall, farmers' markets seasonally, lots of artists with studios, a gym, a small shopping center called the Driftwood, a few pubs, including one at Browning Harbour, one at Poet's Cove on Bedwell Harbour, etc. This cabin/property is located on the north end of South Pender Island, bordering the marine park and Bedwell Harbour, in the Canadian Gulf Islands, between Vancouver & Victoria, and it is easily accessed by ferry from Vancouver (via Tsawwassen) or Victoria (via Swartz Bay) or Seattle (via Anacortes to Sydney ferry or via Tsawwassen). The property is sharing its border with the marine park which is now part of the Southern Gulf Islands National Park Reserve. The cottage is most suited for couples, or a single wishing a quiet and private retreat in a spectacular waterfront setting. Families are welcome, but we do restrict the occupancy to a total of 4 persons. You will see and enjoy lots of wildlife - eagles, herons, seals, otter, hummingbirds and orcas (a resident pod). Two levels plus a sleeping loft and two levels of deck (2200 square feet of deck). The Penders (actually two islands joined by a bridge) enjoy a warmer climate with much less rain than Vancouver. The autumn is spectacular! The Penders are a rural setting but many amenities are available, including 3 or 4 excellent restaurants, a spa, 3 grocery stores, a excellent library, a farmer's market (in season), a liquor store, book store, gas station, 2 bakeries, a gym or two, several pubs, a few cafes. Sailing, kayaking, hiking, golf, frisby golf, cycling are all enjoyed on the islands. From the top of Mt Norman, immediately behind the cabin, one can see the other Southern Gulf Islands, the San Juan Islands,in the USA, parts of Vancouver Island, and the mainland including parts of Vancouver. You will be able to catch crab right off the dock and fishing for Salmon and other fish (seasonally) is also a past time of many people on the islands. Call 604.228.8079
