Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, United States
A charming geodesic dome on 2 acres. A rustic exterior with a modern, lovely, cozy, interior, a well-equipped, spacious kitchen, 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, a great room, a hot tub. Walk out the door and turn left for a romantic 3/4 mile creekside walk to the dramatic Bixby Beach. The dome and surroundings are quiet, distraction-free. Ideal for focusing on work or a lovely spot to COVID shelter-in-place. You will feel more like you are on a retreat than COVID isolated. There is plenty of hiking where you only infrequently run into a neighbor or a tourist who has wandered onto private property. The beach is private by default. The 300' cliffs that surround it are too steep for 99.9% of the gazillion tourists who park at the scenic turn out off of Hiway 1 to peer down with their cameras. (Bixby Bridge is one of the most photographed spots in California, often said second only to the Golden Gate.) The pros and cons: This is a wild, lonely, and rugged part of the California Coast with few restaurants but the restaurants there are excellent to moderately good and a third of them have spectacular views. There are numerous trails but few hotels so the thousands of tourists generally pass on through, leaving the nighttime skies dark and perfect. Lose yourself star gazing while you sit in the hot tub. Major activities are hiking, biking, bird watching, beachcombing, meandering. The house is modern but is heated by wood. The wood stove also makes a lovely fireplace, is very efficient and its catalytic converter makes it relatively pollution-free.
