The Firehouse apartment has been home to Cornell faculty members and graduate students since 2022 who valued its quiet setting, aesthetics, privacy and easy commute to campus. We are a couple of NYC graphic designers who bought and renovated this 1960 firehouse in a rural hamlet in the Finger Lakes region. We completely remodeled the upper floor, preserving its slightly industrial, loft-like and airy vibe. Entry is through a private door on the driveway side of the building—you are welcome to park close to your entrance. Rooms are spacious: the living room is almost 24’ long while the kitchen is 20’ and sun-filled with its southern exposure. There are two bedrooms—a larger one with a queen bed and a smaller one with a twin. The smaller bedroom is currently set up as an office but can easily be converted back to a bedroom. We’ve lightly furnished the space with classic mid-century modern pieces and paintings from local and NYC artists. The sunny and large gourmet kitchen has Carrara marble counters, stainless steel appliances including a Bosch dishwasher and 900 CFM stove vent and is stocked with quality cooking and tableware. Bathroom has an energy efficient Bosch washer and dryer. The south-facing deck overlooks the organic vegetable and flower garden and forest beyond. The patio with pergola and graveled front garden are part of our downstairs living space, but you are welcome to use them whenever we are away (we only live here part-time). Heat is provided by propane-fueled baseboard heating and/or a powerful Norwegian wood stove; cooling is by a window air conditioner. It is a peaceful, rural setting but not isolated; friendly neighbors are nearby. Our hamlet includes artists, filmmakers, craftspeople, nature lovers, musicians and academics and is a very LGBTQ friendly community. Cornell and Ithaca College are both 11 miles north of us by car. We are a 5 minute walk away from the Lindsay-Parsons Biodiversity Preserve, and many other hiking trails are either walkable or drivable within 10 minutes. Ithaca Beer, South Hill Cider, farm stands and CSA pickups are around 10 minutes away by car. And a recently openly spot called Stone Bend Farm serving wood oven pizza and craft beer in their greenhouse is 11 miles from us—recommended! We have more photos, information, video walk-through and floor plan here: http://modfirehouse.com.
