Our five-bedroom family home is in a “bourg” (between a village and a town) in the beautiful Burgundy countryside, 40 minutes’ drive from Dijon. It has a large, convivial kitchen/dining area, a sitting room with working open fire (there is central heating, as well) and a charming old-fashioned aesthetic which we took care to retain during an extensive modernisation a decade ago – even the ceiling above the staircase is wallpapered! The spacious master bedroom has an adjoining office with views down to the river and the bathroom has a claw bath and shower. Two levels of bedrooms mean privacy for teenagers (and adults!) or a bedroom near their parents for younger children. One of the bedrooms has a blackboard wall, which our kids enjoyed when young. There is a toilet downstairs off the kitchen and a full bathroom on the first floor. Vitteaux has schools for children up to age 15, an excellent bakery, two tabacs, two café-restaurants, a pharmacy, a small hospital with basic medical services, and a supermarket. In the summer there is a very cheap community swimming pool, with lifeguard. (July and August only.) There is a bus into Dijon; nearest TER (slower train) station is 15 minutes’ drive away, while Montbard TGV is 30 minutes’ drive, has free parking and the train takes an hour to Paris. In addition to easy access to the university and librairies, museums and markets in Dijon, there is lots to do nearby, from the medieval village of Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, which has been making anis sweets in the same way since the 16th century, to the vineyards of the Côte d’Or. Please note: Car preferable as the bus into Dijon only runs a few times a day. The house has no garden.
