Located on the top floor in the back of a historic Kreuzberg building, this apartment is quiet and flooded with light. I just love taking my morning coffee on the balcony, overlooking the green backyard. The large living/dining room connects to the kitchen, while the bedroom opens to the balcony. I just had this place completely renovated, with fitted walk-in closets and sleek wood paneling, as well as brand new high-quality appliances. As that my current fellowship started just a few months after the renovations finished, I hung lamps and pictures after taking the pictures uploaded here, but the aesthetic remains minimalist, making the place feel very calm. There are no neighbors' windows directly opposite the back side of the house, so I have not put up curtains so far. In the summer, I just get up early or use a sleeping mask. This place is my home – so it has everything you will need. As I love cooking, the kitchen is fully equipped. You will also find all of the office essentials, from a large screen and office chair down to a hole punch and printer. The fiber optic internet will make your online work seamless. The fold-out couch is actually comfortable enough to house a guest for a few nights, and the table is big enough to throw a dinner (but please be respectful of the neighbors!). I will be leaving some clothes in one of the walk-in closets, but you will have more than enough room in the other. The vacuum cleaner, drying racks, and ironing board are not brand new, so they need a little love when being used! I bike almost everywhere (there are bike racks in the yard downstairs), but there are three subway lines within convenient walking distance (U7, U1/3, U8), as well as buses. You will also find rental scooters/bikes/e-bikes just outside the door. Humboldt University is very close, but the U3 also takes you to Freie Universität and makes TU Berlin easy to reach as well. I also love going to the spacious Staatsbibliothek locations near Potsdamer Platz or HU Berlin, both of which are easy to reach. If you prefer to work from a coffee shop every now and then, there are a lot to pick from within walking distance. You will also find that there are tons of lunch places, restaurants, and bars nearby. A couple of neighborhood stores are just one block away, and bigger supermarkets (organic and regular) as well as a department store and drycleaner are also walkable. A wine store, a fruit vendor, a book store, even a toy store are waiting for you to explore; twice a week, you can also shop at a Turkish farmer's market by the canal. To the other side of the neighborhood, the bridge over the canal is a favorite hang-out spot in the evening. Amazingly, none of this vibrant activity carries any noise into the back of this building, so you can even sleep with open windows – if you don't mind hearing the birds! For runners, this place has a lot to offer; the promenade along the canal takes you as far as you like, and the Tempelhofer Feld (the old airport field, with landing strips still marked) is a green paradise not just for runners but also for cyclists, skaters, and of course picknickers enjoying a Spritz at sundown, or the local beergarden. Berlin apartments usually have no AC, but leaving the windows open overnight and keeping them shut during the hot hours of the day usually keeps this place cool enough (and there is a fan if you need it!). As I mentioned, there is no street noise to worry about when sleeping with open windows. I will be completing a fellowship in New York, but I have family in Berlin who can help in case something needs taking care of.
