WELCOME Imagine waking up with Lake Malawi at your doorstep: water so clear you can watch fish swim beneath the surface, a small untouched island just offshore, and nothing between you and the view but your private balcony. Welcome to an off-grid house I self-built and live in full-time, on a beautiful stretch of Lake Malawi. Life here is calm and slower-paced, shaped by the lake rather than a hectic schedule. It's a genuine home, self-catered and lived-in, not a hotel. YOUR ROOM Private first-floor room with 24/7 solar power and Starlink internet, so you can stay connected whenever you need to. The room includes a dedicated desk and chair, a double bed with a mosquito net, an en-suite bathroom, and a balcony looking straight over the water. A lockable cupboard and drawers for your belongings. The bathroom has a sink, compost toilet, and a cold water shower. On sunny days, the tank warms up by late morning, giving you the option of a warm shower too. SHARED LIVING This is a self-catered home with a shared kitchen and living area. A relaxed, easygoing space where you can cook, hang out and make yourself at home. Vikki, the cleaner, comes three times a week to keep spaces fresh and tidy, and is also happy to do your laundry. THINGS TO DO • A paddleboard and canoe are available for you to explore the shoreline, paddle to the island, or watch the fishermen head out at dawn. • Boat trips and guided mountain hikes are available too, if you want to explore further. • You can meet the village chief, learn how to make traditional cassava flour, and get a real look at everyday village life in rural Malawi. • There's an acoustic guitar to play if you're musical. • I can organise canvas and paints if you're feeling artistic. • A short trip away, there's also an established lodge you can visit. • If you'd rather relax indoors, there's also Netflix and a PS4 with a VR headset. GETTING HERE Getting here is part of the experience - take a car to Nkhata Bay, an overnight stop by the lake, then a boat across open water until the house comes into view on the shoreline. Optional private transfers are available if you'd rather not navigate the journey yourself. I can also arrange your grocery shopping in Mzuzu before you arrive, so you've got food ready and waiting when you get here. A DIFFERENT WAY TO LIVE FOR A WHILE If you're looking for a change of pace and the chance to live off-grid on one of Africa's most beautiful lakes, I think you'll love it here. Perfect for academics, writers, artists, researchers, remote workers, or anyone looking for uninterrupted time to think, create, or simply slow down. This isn't a polished retreat or hotel experience with everything mapped out for you; it's a home, and while you're here, it's yours too, at whatever pace suits you. If that sounds like what you're looking for, I'd love to welcome you. GUEST REFLECTIONS While I'm new to Sabbatical Homes, I have welcomed guests from around the world. Here are a few words they've shared about their stay; Jan - Czech Republic - 2026 "Had a really great experience. Luke is a genuinely kind and welcoming person who make you feel at home right away. If you feel like you need to escape from the city or take a break from computer screens and offices, this is the perfect place to disconnect and recharge". Alyssa - USA - 2026. “Luke is beyond amazing, he is wise, kind and considerate. This isn't just an experience, it's a sacred pause, a space to soften, to heal and to remember who you are beneath the noise. If you come here, know you will leave cleansed in spirit. There are places you visit and then there are places that quietly rebuild you from the inside out". VISA Malawi offers a 90 day tourist visa from $50 USD. A 6 month extension is available for a further $50 if you'd like to stay longer.
