Description

One reason this block has been featured in hundreds of movies is what makes it such a great location: New York City charm in the heart of one of the world’s most vibrant neighborhoods, coupled with sheer quiet. The apartment is situated on a street that due to the proximity of Cooper Union School of Design (where Lincoln famously gave his Nation Divided Speech), it’s not a thru street. It’s also a street drenched charm—the NY Times called it one of the ten quaintest blocks in the City—and cool. The Velvet Underground had their HQ next door, where Yoko Ono worked and the Beats operated a cafe hang out. The apartment itself is what’s termed a railroad, a long layout with a loft in the back, where the toilet also resides. The shower is in the kitchen. In the 1890s this building was tenement, but was long ago split into multiple apartments. There is a cat named Lily you will need to feed and give some attention. She’s sweet and gregarious, and at 12 still pretty kittenish. Food and instructions will be provided. The apt is fully furnished, has WiFi and AC, as well as fridge and stove with an oven, and a toaster oven. There’s no TV, but you may ofc use your own laptop and there’s an available 26” monitor if desired. As a it’s railroad, certain things come with the territory—it’s a 3-floor walk up, no elevator. The bed is a futon, and it’s in the front room. The back room is mainly a dressing room with a large closet. My personal effects will be stored in the loft above, which will not be available. The place is a cozy refuge in a busy city, a 5 minute walk to all the major subways. The restaurants with a block or two include David Chang’s Momofuku and the celebrated new Indian restaurant ADDA. Also Upstate, a block away, features great fresh-caught seafood and an oyster & microbrew happy hour. Mister Paradise around the corner offers an update on the tiki bar. There are too many sushi places to even list. On East Fourth Street just 3 blocks away lies theatre row for off-Broadway, including the works-famous La Mama Theatre. Anthology Film archive two blocks below that offers art films and up on 12th street there’s more mainstream cinema. Historic St Marks of the Bowery is a couple blocks up, McSorley’s Ale House is half a block down. St Marks itself is a block away. And yet it it’s a quiet, tree-lined block in a neighborhood safe enough for celebrities in music, film and the arts to call it home—and enjoy its untrammeled, cosmopolitan ambience. The place is not just comfortable, but perfectly located for access to nearby NYU and the New School, and has Cooper Union at the end of the block. The subways make every part of the city accessible within 40 minutes, including Columbia University uptown. Things to keep in mind: there is no lobby or doorman. An intercom and buzzer system is used instead. Security is provided by two sets of doors at the entrance. And the general safety of the neighborhood is guaranteed by being in the center of everything.
