Our house is in a nice and very convenient part of beautiful downtown Santa Barbara. The downstairs has 3 bedrooms (2 for rent, one we will use to store our stuff) and 1.5 baths, a family room (with TV and part set up as a small office space with printer and extra monitor), kitchen with adjacent dining space, plus a small living room with a double size futon couch (which can be used as a basic guest room). Upstairs there is a separate, occupied 2BR unit with small kitchen and living room over the garage with it's own external entrance rented by a young professional couple (backyard sitting space/firepit is shared with them). The backyard does not look into the main part of the house. The wonderful couple, who are our close friends, have two kids. The boy will turn 4 in August and the girl, 2, a couple months later. We have pretty good soundproofing, but family noises will be heard from our family room which is adjacent to the closed-off internal stairwell. We are 6 blocks from State Street, which is the vibrant downtown core area. We are near the old Spanish Mission, parks (great kids playground 3 blocks away), and reasonably close to the express bus line to UCSB (easiest to use a bike, ride to the bus, put it on the bus's bike rack, and use it at UCSB, since it is a bike-oriented campus). Westmont College and Santa Barbara City College are even closer. We can discuss borrowing a bike(s). Our place would also be great for an academic with a family looking for a nice vacation or spot to write/study. We have somewhat small side and back yards (with small patch of grass, fruit trees, and a fire pit and tables), but they are big enough for kids to enjoy or to entertain. The back yard is shared with our renters. The side yard has a vegetable garden that is also shared (that you could use too, assuming we have items growing). The BBQ is on the side yard/patio. It would be up to you if you wanted to give the renters access. They would check in with you first. The buffalo grass lawn and small patio space would be your to use exclusively. You'd want to coordinate with the renters if you'd want to use the back patio/firepit area to avoid conflicting use. Our 2 available downstairs bedrooms have a queen bed and a full/twin trundle. The small front (living) room can be closed off and has a full size futon we use for guests. There is plenty for all ages to do in the area. The proximity to the main street (State Street) is super convenient. Since COVID, 8 blocks are closed off for pedestrian/bicycle use (almost all the way to the wharf ... we are about a mile and a half from the beach). Rental is by the week with a 4-week suggested minimum and probably a 9-week max (negotiable). We are suggesting $1600 plus a one time $150 cleaning fee (to augment you leaving our house in a the clean condition that you found it). There will also be a refundable "damage" deposit that we can negotiate. We have some flexibility so please don't hesitate to ask. For example for each week over 4-weeks we would provide an increasing discount. We mainly want you to enjoy our great house and city and have our travels aided by your stay. I am a professor of Geography and Environmental Sciences. Two previous sabbaticals had us in New Zealand (Univ. of Auckland) for a semester each, but this time it is a special retirement trip. The goal is to spend around 2 months in Europe: visiting family in England, ancestral homelands (well, some of them, namely Norway and Sweden) and then some time staying put in Switzerland while contemplating what is next in our lives. Our place is a strictly no smoking/vaping/drugs household. It is also not a vacation party "pad". It is sent in a nice in-city, older owner-occupied neighborhood with many historic craftsman cottages. Great walking opportunities abound. I'll be happy to tell you more about our place, renters, and neighborhood. Just reach out.

Comments: Upper Eastside, Riviera, Downtown
Comments: This is well below market, but is negotiable especially for a stay more than a month. Our place is a nice family home, but not set up like a fancy vacation rental. We hope to rent to a family/couple/faculty member(s) like we have on my sabbaticals.
Comments: Could add a car(s) with a bit more rent. We have a Prius and RAV4 that may be available.
Mainly just to collect it. We have a 2br rental above our garage and family room. The very nice young couple's mail is delivered with ours (we put their items in a separate box on the side of the house). This should be minimal effort.
Most plants are on a sprinker/drip system, but a few pots in the front and side yard could use occasional watering. We can ask our renters, who are our close friends to cover those spots, especially if you are gone for a few days.
Comments: The laundry in our primary garage is shared with our renters. They keep most of their stuff in our other detached garage. We can make space for a couple bikes. The yard is divided. Renters use the back, but access the shared side-yard garden.

Comments: Small office space in our family room. If you need a larger office space and are a couple/single, the second bedroom could serve that purpose. The small front entry/living room has a futon couch we use for guests.

Comments: Start/end dates approximate. I am retiring in July and we are planning a 2 month trip to/exended stay in Europe. We rent the top floor of our house to a young family. They have a separate entry. Their two kids will be just 4 and almost 2 when rented.
