Airy, large, loft-like fully furnished home with large fenced yard and huge oak trees. Very convenient in north central Pasadena, with shaded streets, good houses, stable and good neighborhood. Two large bedrooms with bath and two offices (one is actually used as a bedroom -- it's a studio with garden views on three sides of full-height glass.) House available for 2 - 4 nights; a longer stay of one week negotiable. The house is unusual in that although it is in the middle of the residential Orange Heights Historic District known for its handsome Craftsman bungalows, the home began as a schoolhouse, built as the "world's first college of orthodontia" by USC dentist Dr. Edward Angle, who lived next door and who developed "braces" here. Hence, the many large windows; spacious and airy rooms; and the 20’ x 30’ living room, once the original lecture theatre. The school was built in 1922 by Peter Hall, who with his brother John served as the builders for the Arts and Crafts architects Charles and Henry Greene, designers of the famous 1908 Gamble House located five minutes away. Dr. Angle’s widow converted the building to residential use in the 1940s. House renovated for sustainability and safety: great cross ventilation, roof super-insulated, roof ridge vents, ceiling fans in bedrooms, motion detector lights. Quiet Friedrich AC unit in living room cools almost the whole house. Unusual features include 10’ ceilings, lots of built-in cabinetry and books on architecture. Upgraded elite wireless dsl. Garage suits one car and free off-street parking space for another. Two TVs; Amazon Prime included. No commercial cable service. Co-ax cable in each bedroom. Original Batchelder tile fireplace with damper, commercial-quality DCS gas stove with 15,000 Btus, Bosch dishwasher, microwave, zinc countertops, skylights, baby grand piano, lots of storage. Floors are grey-green slate, oak, polished concrete or linoleum. Firm queen mattresses in each bedroom. 20’ x 30’ basement houses washer, dryer, wood shop. Fences and two gates are 6’ (1.8m) tall except for very rear, where it is 3’ fronted by tall shrubbery. Rear gate, to trash and the narrow street behind (which also serves garage entrance), is kept padlocked when not in use. Weber b-b-que, outdoor patio with handsome new heavy-timber pergola sheltering L-shaped lounge, coffee table under the trees. About 4 miles to the Huntington Library/Caltech, even nearer to Central and Old Town Pasadena; the San Gabriel mountains and lower Arroyo for hiking etc. are minutes away. Downtown Los Angeles is 20-25 car minutes. 20 minute fast walk to the closest Metro stop. Shopping at great ethnic markets (Armenian, Indian, Latino, Italian) nearby, as are good retail shopping, restaurants in all flavors and price points, Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. No smoking on property. Dogs and children OK with additional deposit. RATES for other than CHRISTMAS/NEW YEAR'S: (max 4 people) = $1,250/week (six nights). Weekends (for two people) $650 for three nights, $500 for two nights. Short-term rentals of one to two weeks negotiable depending on the number of guests and time of year. $225 cleaning fee. Security deposit varies with length of stay. Christmas and New Year's holiday rates are individually set.
