I was visiting the San Francisco Bay Area a few years ago, and I had an unfortunate accident that required surgery on my leg and no weight-bearing activity for 3 months! Unable to travel back to the East Coast, I needed a small, inexpensive place to stay to heal and had to have a place with no stairs or steps. I was so grateful to find a professor’s pied-a-terre, a ground-floor apartment in Berkeley. The professor whose apartment we stayed in was fortunately very flexible and gracious about our uncertain end date. I couldn’t have designed a better place for my recovery!
